Introduction: Welcome to your new web site control panel!

Checking your stats for the previous web site, I see you had a burst of traffic for a while that peaked in October at around 210 visitors a day. Now it has died out to around 10 a day. This is obviously because there is currently little or no content on the site. They say in the web site industry that 'CONTENT IS KING'! I think this is crucially important for a hardworking band like yourselves. Even if you did have content, it goes stale VERY quickly and people stop coming back if it never changes.

For that reason, I have created this admin control panel, for you to control every detail of the site. Each change you make within the control panel area will automatically display on the site itself! The purpose of this is to make it incredibly easy for you to keep the content fresh, varied and up to date, just as you would with a Myspace profile.

I have included everything I can think of that you will need to keep your fans constantly coming back for more. All you need to do is stay on top of it, and keep the content fresh. Use these powerful tools to keep the web site alive. You should have scheduled updates and always change or add enough content to make it worth your fans coming back. Make them feel like they are part of an ever evolving web site community. This is a great way to increase your fan base and make sure fans come to your gigs. Include every piece of band news, post info about gigs, upload new photo galleries, music and videos whenever possible! And after each update, send out a message to your mailing list to let them know about the changes. This is the way to keep your web site popular.

To navigate around the admin, you can use the main links on the Admin section. From each section you can use the navigatory links which will display at the bottom of the section or the top of the whole page. From these links you can jump directly to the appropriate help file if you get stuck.

Many sections of this admin have the facility to alter the text which will be displayed on the web site page. Notable examples are the home page and the profile pages. In the text input areas you can change the text which will then display on the page. What you can also do is include HTML code! For example, to make text bold, put it inside these tags: <span class="bold">TEXT HERE</span> or in italic <span class="italic">TEXT HERE</span>, ,or both <span class="bold italic">TEXT HERE</span>. The tags themselves do not display on the page, only the formatting. This gives you a very powerful method of spicing up your content. You can also use tags to add more content like images and hyperlinks. To upload custom images use the File Upload Utility. There is information in the upload help regarding the use of HTML code to display the images and create hyperlinks.

Here is some more info on images, and hyperlinks. It is possible to copy html code from a WYSIWYG editor such as Frontpage into these boxes... but please do not do this, as it can be very messy and will affect the validity of the code! Use only plain handwritten code as shown in the above links.

One incredibly powerful feature of your new web site is in its ability to report the last update. Any changes you make in the admin area are logged along with the date, and displayed in small text at the top of the home page. This tells fans at a first glance if any content has changed since their last visit and is a brilliant way to keep them coming back. Hopefully it will also give you the motivation to keep that content moving! It's the single most important thing you can do to get your website's traffic flowing. I think you get the message!
Home page: I have kept the format of the home page simple. You have one image which represents the band. This is aligned to the right. You can upload a replacement for this image at any time you like. You should have a blurb about the band on here, as an introduction to the site. You should also have any major announcements such as upcoming gigs displayed on this page. If you wish to include additional images or links, you must use the code as specified in the tutorials on images, and hyperlinks.

Home Page Admin
News: To add a news item, simply choose a title (ie. "New gig announced") and write the new article itself. The new news item will automatically display at the top of the news page. It will generate its own date. You can modify each news item by clicking the Modify button in the News Admin area, or delete a new item if necessary.

News Admin
Band profiles: You will find the profile admin pages to be identical to the homepage admin. The only difference is that you are also required to upload a thumbnail for the each profile page in addition to the main image. As demonstrated in the sample text, you can include whatever you like in your own profile. Age, height, likes, dislikes, a blurb about yourself, anything you like. You can also keep a regular journal here if you like. A brilliant way to keep your fans coming back! Same rules apply for images and hyperlinks.

Any changes you make to these sections will automatically show up in the respective sections of the site.

Profile Admin Pages - Dale, Lem, Eck, Lee, Goody
Discography and Lyrics You have the facility to add any new releases, albums EPs etc. Just put the self explanatory details into the fields below the list, locate an image and a thumbnail on your computer, and submit the form. Aftgerwards you can use the Album link in the MODIFY column to change any of these items.

To add tracks to your CDs, select the Tracks link in the MODIFY column. You can only choose how many tracks the first time you add these so get it right the first time. You can then put in the title of each track. You also have the option here to put in the lyrics to each track. The track will then show up on the Lyrics page automatically.

Discog Admin
Live Shows: Any confirmed gig dates can be added here to display automatically on the Live Shows page of the site. If there are no shows confirmed, the page will simply say "No shows currently planned."

To add a gig, choose a venue (ie. "Glasgow Barrowlands"), put the date of the gig, and write a brief description including relevant info like prices and times and other acts. It will generate its own date for admin purposes only. You can modify each Live item by clicking the Modify button in the Live Shows Admin area, or delete a new item if necessary.

Galleries: You have a main gallery and as many custom galleries as you like. This can be a brilliant way to keep your visitors coming back. Constantly maintain and modify the main gallery to keep it fresh. You should also upload new galleries from gigs, or photoshoots. You can also dedicate a gallery to each member if you want. You can do anything you want and all galleries and all changes will show up automatically in the media section of the web site.

To create a new custom gallery, use the Add New Gallery button. Then you must choose a name for the gallery and upload the first image. For each image you must upload both a thumbnail and a full size version. Please only use the .jpg format when uploading images. You can delete galleries at any time, excluding the main gallery.

You have full control over the main gallery and any custom galleries you add. On the page for each gallery, there is a numbered list of thumbnail images along with a checkbox for each image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full size image in a new window. The list is displayed in the exact same order that it displays on the main site. To perfom actions on specific images you must first select the checkboxes on those images.

To delete images:
Select the required images, choose "Delete Selected" radio button, and click submit.
To swap 2 images:
Select 2 images, choose the "Swap Images" radio button and click submit.
To move an image:
Select 1 image. and choose its new position from the dropdown, then click submit.
To upload a new image:
Find an image and a thumbnail on your PC before clicking submit.
You can also rename your gallery. Choose a name and click submit.

At any point in the process, you can backup the gallery so can revert back to it at any time. To back up a gallery, select Create Backup and click submit. To restore a previously saved backup, select Restore Backup and click submit. Please note that deleting a gallery also deletes the backup!

Music: To add a music file to the media section, choose a title for the song, locate the file (mp3 only please!) on the hard drive, and write a brief description. Click submit, once, and wait for the file to upload. It may take a few minutes to respond so be patient. It will generate its own date which only shows up in the admin area. You can modify each entry by clicking the Modify button in the Music Admin area, or delete any item if necessary.

The files uploaded here will automatically show up in the music section of the media zone. Users will have the option to play or download the file, depending on the settings of their machine. You can have as many tunes on here as you like. Think about alternative versions, or live recordings to keep the content fresh and the users coming back for more!

Music Admin
Video: This is the kind of content that your fans will be drooling over for years to come! Videos must be uploaded in Flash video format. This is the only format that will work on the site. I have supplied software that will convert any video format to FLV format. Try to mess about with the settings to get the best quality but the smallest size. Try to keep the file size under 5MB if possible.

To add a video file to the media section, choose a title for the video, locate the file (FLV only please!) on the hard drive, and write a brief description. Reviews: Add any press or reviews here, much as you would enter an item in your news section (News Help Section). You have the same administrative control over each item.

Reviews Admin
Shop: Here you can add items which your visitors will be able to order immediately, and pay you through Paypal. This will be ideal for selling tickets, or your CDs, or tshirts, or any other items you would like to sell.

To add an item, choose a title for the item, a price, and write a brief description. You must also upload a picture, and a thumbnail. The item will automatically show up in the band shop section. It will generate its own date which only shows up in the admin area. You can modify each item by clicking the Modify button in the Store Admin area, or delete a new item if necessary.

You can also optionally add an image to display as a banner. The new link will automatically display at the bottom of the news page, along with its banner where applicable. It will generate its own date which only shows up in the admin area. You can modify each link by clicking the Modify button in the Links Admin area, or delete a new item if necessary.

Links Admin
Mailing List: A valuable method for keeping the fans coming back for more is to keep a mailing list. Fans volunteer their email address directly through the site, or you can add them to this list manually. Then whenever you have a major update to the site or an announcement to make, you can send a message out to your mailing list!

To add a new address, put the address into the appropriate box and click the Add button.
To delete one or more names from the list, check the boxes and click the Delete button.
To send a message to your list, type a title and a message, then click the Send button.

Don't abuse this facility! Don't send irrelevant or duplicate messages. Some people will get pretty annoyed by unsolicited email and you can get in trouble. The trick is to send out messages with valuable information and make extensive updates to the site.

Mailing List
File Upload: This is where you can upload any custom images, music or videos that you don't want to show up in any of the automated areas. This way you can place custom images in your profiles, or news items or on the forum. Simply locate the file on your computer and click the Upload button. The FILE URL of the uploaded file will be displayed after uploading.

File names can only be numbers, letters, a dash - or an underscore _, no spaces or weird characters. Once you have uploaded the image, it will be stored at the FILE URL where you can use it as you like. To check the FILE URL at any time, right click on the file's link and select View Properties.

To display an image in another section, use this code and replace the capitalised part with the file URL as above:
<img src="FILE URL" alt=""/>

To make a hyperlink, use this code to point to the LINK URL (ie another web site like http://www.lance-taylor.com):
<a href="LINK URL">LINK TEXT or IMAGE CODE</a>
The LINK TEXT can be whatever you want to display on the link. You can upload any type of file you wish. To link to your file, just use the FILE URL in the hyperlink instead of a LINK URL.

Here is some more info on images, and hyperlinks.
You can delete one file at a time from the server by selecting it and clicking Delete.
